Learn about Shell, WY

Shell is a census designated place found in Big Horn County in Wyoming. This small town calls itself home to 83 people, according to the 2010 census. It is located at the base of the Big Horn Mountains. Shell Creek can also be found here, connected to the Big Horn Mountains and joining the Big Horn River to the north of Greybull.

The town is named so because of the abundance of fossil shells in the area. Many fossils of dinosaurs and other animals have been found here, especially within the exposed Cloverly and Morrison Formations. Iowa State University geology field station can also be found here.
